No today I enjoyed amazing handmade pork dumplings for a mere $1 for 5. They were incredible.

Interviewer: What were the skies like when you were young

Jones: They went on forever – They - When I w- We lived in Arizona, and the skies always had little fluffy clouds in ‘em, and, uh… they were long… and clear and… there were lots of stars at night. And, uh, when it would rain, it would all turn - it- They were beautiful, the most beautiful skies as a matter of fact. Um, the sunsets were purple and red and yellow and on fire, and the clouds would catch the colors everywhere. That’s uh, neat cause I used to look at them all the time, when I was little. You don’t see that. You might still see them in the desert.

Prior posts on fierce historical figures reminded me of one my favorite biblical bad girls: Judith. This story was first told to my by my mother as a child, because she shares the same first name. In retrospect this was a bit gory to be telling a little kid but anyway….

Her story goes like this:

Judy is a Jewish widow living in an occupied Israel. Pissed that her countrymen are doing nothing to expel the conquerors, she decides to take things into her own hands. She flirts hardcore with the Assyrian general Holohernes. One night Holo gets wasted, invites Judy into his tent and the promptly passes out. (we have so all been there). Judy takes this opportunity to decapitate him. With their leader gone the Assyrians disperse and Israel is saved.

NOTE TO BACHELORS: put down that razor before you go out this weekend. Researchers in England used a software program to design and morph three male faces - rated equally attractive in clean-shaven form by a group of women - with five levels of facial hair, up to a full beard. This set of 15 faces was then evaluated in random order by another group of women. In line with previous research, perceptions of masculinity, dominance, aggression, maturity, and age all increased in proportion to facial hair. However, attractiveness was highest for light-stubble faces and lowest for clean-shaven and fully bearded faces. The authors note that this result could be due to contemporary fashion, the particular age preferences of the (university) women in the study, or stubble signaling a happy middle ground of masculinity.
