The Santa Ana [wildfire]

My beloved Santa Barbara is once again up in flames. Whenever wildfires hit the area, I inevitably recur to one of my all-time favorite pieces of writing, Joan Didion’s The Santa Ana .That features one of my all-time favorite quotes:

It is hard for people who have not lived in Los Angeles to realize how radically the Santa Ana figures in the local imagination. The city burning is Los Angeles’s deepest image of itself.

    I live in Malibu, and I DO understand about the fires. We have them every year, Last year a 60 mph wind driven fire burned to my front door. Homes around me were lost, mine survived.

    I have also written a novel about the coming of age of a young wildland firefighter in CA
    called One Foot In The Black
